What Is Rev.com, and What Does It Do?

Rev.com is a voice recognition platform that uses top-tier automatic speech recognition technology and a network of expert freelancers to translate spoken language.

With Rev’s speech-to-text services, its users gain insights and make every word accessible thanks to unparalleled speed, accuracy, captions, transcripts, and subtitles.

In addition, Rev’s suite of speech-to-text APIs allows automatic transcription in over 30 languages.

A large dataset allows accuracy across all dialects and accents.

Ordering transcripts is as easy as clicking a button within the app.

Things To Consider Before Buying a Speech-to-Text Service

According to Global News Wire, the global market size of speech-to-text API will hit $5.8 billion in 2027.

As a result, you need to choose an exceptional speech-to-text service.

You should evaluate several factors before buying a speech-to-text service for your business.

Here are a few aspects to consider:

Regulation and Safety Compliance

If you are bound to the CJIS or ADA regulations, the transcription service must be compliant or willing to sign a BAA

Companies that don’t protect client data are fined heavily.

Evaluate how the transcription service handles cybercrime and data breaches.

Quality Control

Do you plan to submit final transcripts to an insurer, use them in court, or use them for research?

If so, you need to produce good-quality transcripts.

Confirm whether the transcribing service undertakes a quality check before handing you the final documents.

Inquire about the company’s quality assurance strategy.

Transcription Process

Will a smartphone app or digital recorder work?

How long are transcripts preserved, and can I view them online?

Request a demo of how the service works.

Their Employees and Freelancers

Take into account the company’s transcriptionists and speech recognition technology.

Additionally, check what education and job history the company prefers.

Some transcription services undertake background checks of their production team.

Speech-to-text accuracy depends on the production team’s abilities and tools.

Evaluate whether the company recruits the right experts to offer their services.

Customer Support

How do you use transcribing service software?

Check whether it’s possible to email or call the transcription service.

Is there a ticketing system to track a problem after it’s reported?

Can the company offer web-based remote help? What about local support?

Also, check the availability of the support team; remember that differences in time zones can affect the waiting time of customer support responses.

Billing

Consider how many words, pages, characters, or time it will take to compute your bill.

Are you paying a “gross line” or a “per-character line” rate for transcription?

Check out the company’s metrics to calculate the bills and how the entire billing process works.

Adaptability

Compatibility and adaptability with document management software are also quite important.

Check how you’ll access the final document and the available formatting options.

For instance, the company should offer an option to download your document in any format you require, be it pdf or .docx.

It can be quite challenging if the company only offers a copy-paste option, as the document might lose all its formatting.

How Does Rev.com Work, and What Are Its Pros & Cons?

Rev.com Speech-to-text Services is a transcription company that offers transcription services for clients in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Rev was founded in 2009, offering transcription, translation, and closed captioning services.

They utilize full-time workers in an office setting and independent contractors working from home.

Aside from being recognized on popular tech blogs like Tech Crunch and The Wall Street Journal, PC Mag has also recognized Rev with its Editor’s Choice Award for its ability to transcribe audio and video data accurately.

For anyone interested in freelancing for Rev, the company currently has four roles available:

  • Transcriptionist: A transcriptionist translates spoken English into text.
  • Captioner: Transcribes audio in English and superimposes Rev subtitles into videos.
  • Subtitler: Converting on-screen speech into text to make the video more accessible to a broader audience.
  • Translator: Unlike video subtitling, a translator works on various projects that involve language translation.

You can easily learn internet transcribing and translation services even if you have never done it before.

To transcribe or translate audio or video files, clients upload them to Rev, and you start working on them depending on the client’s guidelines.

Though it appears easy initially, the task can get complicated if there is a lot of background noise, intricate accents, and too many people talking at once.

At Rev, your income depends on your roles and the jobs you complete.

For captioning, you can make anywhere from $.45 to $.75 per video or audio minute, while transcriptionists can make anywhere from $.24 to $1.20 per video/audio minute.

On average, an individual can transcribe or caption between $8.00 and $15.00 worth of video or audio per hour.

Some experienced individuals can make even more than $15 per hour.

It all depends on your completed jobs and how quickly you can complete and deliver your work.

Although the pay is quite average in comparison to the national hourly earnings, at least you have the benefit of working from home and choosing your working hours.

Besides, the workload is relatively consistent and reliable.

Rev reports average earnings as roughly $240, with the highest earning of almost $1500 per month.

There is no guaranteed income at Rev. If you’re a freelancer, you must produce more content to increase your earnings.

There is always a need for translators and captioners, especially those who speak foreign languages.

You can fill these roles if you’re fluent in more than one language.

Here is a list of Rev.com’s pros and cons.

Pros

  • The website is easy to use and intuitive with a good user interface
  • Easy to contact customer service with a live chat or phone call
  • You do not have to worry about any errors or mistakes because Rev.com will correct them automatically

Cons

  • Sadly, the quality of some audio files is appalling, making Rev transcription services much harder

Features & Benefits

Let’s explore some of the essential features of Rev

Audio & Video Captioning

Audio and video captions are a perfect way to capture audio or video content for a website. They help to make videos more engaging.

You can transcribe audio and video content from any source, including streaming videos on YouTube, podcasts, news clips, and interviews on Rev.com.

English Closed Captions

Closed captioning is a form of textual translation that provides captions for the hearing impaired.

They are used in television programming and movies to provide subtitles.

Rev captioning enhances the media experience for all audiences by making the dialogue and sound effects more accessible.

Automated Transcription

Automated transcription services allow users to save time and money by automatically filling out forms using real-time speech recognition technology.

It means there’s no need for human transcriptionists or even manual transcriptionists; all one needs is an internet connection and a webcam or microphone.

Global Translated Subtitles

Users can translate their video into any language with global subtitles and see the changes in real time on Rev.com.

They can also select a different subtitle language for each of the videos.

Live Captions for Zoom

With live captions for zoom, a user can listen to a video or podcast in a language that’s not their own and have the words appear on screen as they’re spoken.

When they click on one of the words, it’s automatically translated so they can read it in their preferred language.

The automatic live caption also enhances comprehension of the speaker’s words.

How Much Does It Cost?

If you’re looking for audio and video transcription services, you can expect to pay $1.50 per minute.

The audio & video transcription services come with 99% accuracy, a 5-hour turnaround time, and an interactive transcript editor.

For automated transcription services, the price is $0.25 per minute.

In addition, English closed captions cost an additional $1.50 per minute.

These services are ADA & FCC compliant, have a 5-hour turnaround time, and are 99% accurate.

The cost of using Rev.com to translate subtitles and live captions varies depending on the content.

Still, most users are happy to pay between $5 and $12 per minute for globally translated subtitles.

Are There Any Alternatives?

There are several Rev alternatives, including:

Go Transcript

GoTranscript has been in business since 2005. This platform’s strength is that it hires and services customers in over six languages.

Despite using AI to analyze transcribers’ work, the website offers high-quality manual transcription services.

New users can expect to make $150 per month, while experienced users can make up to $1,215 per month.

The site pays $0.60 per audio minute, but how much you make depends on your experience and speed.

For instance, this pay is decent if you can transcribe a 3-minute audio recording in 10 minutes, as that can translate to approximately $11 per hour.

If you’re starting, you might find it challenging as it can take you even an hour to transcribe a 3-minute audio recording into quality text.
