7 Social Distancing Activities To Improve Mental Health

Best social distancing activities to keep yourself in the right state of mind

Social distancing is a term that many people have come to know and understand more and more throughout the past couple of weeks because of the dangerous and deadly coronavirus. It has many people confused, scared, and unsure of how to behave and act. Of course, they have to keep six feet apart from each other. When they go to the grocery store, they have to stand in line with that same distance. It is causing a tremendous amount of uncertainty for people out there. They are wondering if this is going to be the new normal and how long they will be able to keep it up. They want to interact and connect with people. However, as with anything in life, it is important to adapt to the situation and make the most out of it. No one likes what is going on right now as it is causing disconnect between human beings. When they are around each other, they are scared to get too close or approach their fellow men and women. As mentioned, it is important to adapt and roll with the punches. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Because of this, you have to make sure you are feeling positive in your mindset to charter the water of these unprecedented times. It is why you need to come up with fun and creative social distancing activities to keep yourself in the right state of mind.

7 Social Distancing Activities To Improve Mental Health

1 Pick up a good book

While you might have to practice social distancing at the moment, you can always pick up a good book to get you through these challenging times. When you are invested in a book, you completely forget about all of your worries, troubles, and fears when it comes to the coronavirus. You are lost in it and captivated in the characters and their various plights. If you have been putting off reading, you owe it to yourself and your mental health to pick up a number of books, as there is no telling how long many stay-at-home orders will be in place.

2 Get lost in the magic of movies

Do you love movies? If so, there is no time like the present to get lost in the magic of the cinema. There are plenty of streaming services out there. Many of them are offering 30-day free trials to help those that are stuck inside because of the coronavirus. Much like books, there might be a show out there you have always wanted to binge-watch. Now, you have all of this free time on your hands to watch as many episodes of the show as possible. Once again, this is about the state of your mental health. If you can’t be around people, you have to keep your brain sharp and you have to stay involved in as many activities, hobbies, and interests as possible. The world is your oyster indoors despite what is happening outside.

3 Call up an old friend

You can also call up an old friend. If you or your friend don’t feel comfortable meeting in person, there is no reason why you can’t get together over the phone with FaceTime and catch up on life. This might be a friend you have wanted to reconnect with for a long time, but because life has gotten in the way, you have lost in touch. Now, it is time to change that. When you pick up the phone and talk to them, you will find out all they have been up to over the past couple of years. You never know, your friendship might blossom once again after all of this is said and done.

4 Go out and exercise

Just because you have to practice social distancing, it doesn’t mean your physical fitness has to fall by the wayside. You are still allowed to go outside and exercise. This helps tremendously with mental health. A lot of people are feeling cooped up in the house because of the stay-at-home order, which is causing them to go stir-crazy. As long as you have a path where there are not a lot of people and you have a safe distance from one another, there is no reason why you can’t go for a short daily walk, weather permitting. Activity is the best thing for someone that suffers from mental health issues. It allows them to feel free, happy, and energized. Many people are confused by what they can and can’t do during these times. They can talk a walk, as long as they exercise caution.

5 Pick up new hobbies

A lot of people are picking up new hobbies during this time. People are learning how to knit or crochet for example. It might have been something they have been wanting to do for years and years, but they haven’t had the time. Now, they have nothing but time on their hands. Because they have this time, they can watch YouTube videos on how to make something from scratch. The thing to realize is that you are stronger than you know. While this is testing a lot of people across the world, they are learning they can get through it if they really put their mind to it and focus on other things. The last thing someone wants to do is focus their energy on what they can’t control. They simply need to focus on what they can handle and what is possible. There is no use trying to make the impossible, possible.

6 Discover yourself

Do you have a lot of racing thoughts? Do you have a lot of worries and fears? If so, now is the time to put them down on paper and get them out there. After all of this is said and done and things return to normal, it will be a useful tool to look back on what what was on your mind. You will learn a lot about yourself. Moving forward, you will learn how to cope with stress and uncertainty when it hits again in the future. While this is a once-in-a-lifetime type situation, there is plenty to be discover about yourself along the way.

7 Spend more time with your pets

If you are busy most of your life because of your job and your responsibilities, you might have neglected the furry creatures in your life. However, all of that can change right now by spending more time with your pets. If you pet your cat early and often, it will really help take care of your stress. It will also help strengthen your bond with your pet as well. The benefits are endless when it comes to spending time with your animal or animals, if you have multiple pets. They are here for you, and they can pick up on your stress. They want to help you deal with it in a healthy way.
